Seismology : Earthquake Monitoring

Located between two major techtonic plates, Fiji experiences its share of earthquakes which alarm the public from time to  time
Although no major damage has occurred in recent memory of most people, a concern is always present about the possibilities of a disaster

Activities of the Seismology Unit include Monitoring of earthquake occurrence within Fiji region via a network of short period and broadband seismograph stations, earthquake hazard assessment and earthquake micro-zonation of populated centres.

The units also undertakes some applied seismological work such as seismic reflection and refraction, and Microtremor studies.

Fiji Seismological Data Centre currently holds a database of approximately seven thousand epicentres, of which two thousand five hundred are shallow earthquakes epicentres within Fiji Region. Most of these epicentres and earthquake data are not available elsewhere.

Fiji, a microplate, is precariously located between two major plates, Pacific Plate and IndoAustralian Plate. It's location makes it an ideal place to undertake research in plate tectonics in the region.
